How to avoid 3 common traps blocking your creative balance

I know my regular reactive pattern by now. Something triggers imposter syndrome, which morphs into a sense of urgency, and I push myself until I need a mindless distraction.

Maybe you can relate to one or more parts of this common cycle: 😶

🔥Urgency leads to toxic productivity, then burnout

📲Burnout seeks relief in distraction.

👾And distraction keeps you from ever addressing the anxiety that started it all.

Everyone I've worked with has got their own version playing on loop. When we're stuck in these loops, we tend to fall into old patterns: leading to working harder, overthinking and self-doubt, and compulsively distracting ourselves. Or some combination of the three.


Creativity and Balance

Here's the thing - these are traps, and they keep us from accessing our birthright, our natural creativity and balance.


And creativity and balance aren't luxuries we get only when we hit all our goals - they are essential to bringing our visions to life and working more authentically and joyfully.

Here are the three traps I see most often when it comes to tapping into our natural creativity and balance - and the simple shifts that'll help you avoid them.


Trap # 1 Imposter Syndrome

Even the most seemingly accomplished, successful, confident-seeming leaders feel imposter syndrome about something. Seriously, even white men. 💞😧


Here’s what you need to remember: imposter syndrome is another form of fear. It’s your ego’s way of hiding an emotionally-charged limiting belief that you’re not ____ enough to be or do something you want. It doesn’t matter if logically know now it’s not true, it emotionally hooks you.


💩The trap: It can keep you playing small if you indulge it, OR it can manifest as toxic, egotistical leadership behaviors if you repress it.



💓How to avoid trap # 1: Develop the skill of noticing where imposter feeling shows up in your body. It's deceptively simple and really hard. Having a sense of humor helps. So does kindness. If you can literally just feel it, not suppress or amplify it, that's the first step to transforming it.


Trap # 2 Toxic Productivity.

You need to get this done NOW. Everything feels urgent. It gives you a thrill of momentum and accomplishment to be productive. It feels satisfying to achieve progress. But the ugly truth? It is never enough. It never stops. Until you do.



💩The trap: Toxic productivity is a form of fire - its siblings are criticism - judgement - anger - impatience. It’ll breed workaholism, which will burn you out - mentally, emotionally, and physically, if you aren’t careful.



💓How to avoid trap # 2: First, repeat after me: Being is as valuable as Doing—my worth isn't measured in output.


Second, swap toxic productivity for what I call "grounded diligence": steady, intentional progress without the adrenaline rush. Mark progress with gratitude and small rituals, not just completion.


When you feel that productivity-high calling you, pause and ask, "Am I running from a feeling?" Usually, the urgency is emotional and conditional. Try going for a run/walk outside instead.👉


Trap # 3 Compulsive Distraction

When we’re worn down by toxic productivity our imposter syndrome, distraction is a comforting habit. And you know what? That's OKAY sometimes. When I’m feeling depleted, sometimes the best I can do is just try and keep up with family chores, and indulge in some nice, distracting entertainment.



💩The Trap: You get a nice dopamine hit every time you indulge in distraction, which keeps you coming back for more, again and again. "Dopamine Nation" by Dr. Anna Lembke and "Amusing Ourselves to Death" by Neil Postman both have some biting social commentary on these traps. It’s both culturally systemic, and very personal.



💓How to avoid trap # 3: Don't rely on willpower alone—change your environment (where you can). Remove the easy temptations.


The BEST thing you can do?


Spend more time in nature (the longer, the more detoxifying). Seek moments of awe that reawaken your natural presence and curiosity.


Less screen, more green. 🌳



The Takeaway 👀


Here's what I keep coming back to: the legacy we're building isn't just in the work we produce or the goals we hit.

  • It's in how we move through our days.

  • How we handle pressure.

  • How we treat ourselves when we're scared or tired or overwhelmed.


Learning to connect to our natural creativity and balance on a regular basis —to challenge our fears, practice patience, and choose presence over distraction—isn't a luxury. It's the real work. And it's not a quick fix, but with these three small shifts, you can start to build new patterns that can counter-balance your impulse towards imposter syndrome, toxic productivity, and compulsive distraction.


But as I always like to say - stay playful - it takes some bravery, and it's a journey of a lifetime. Every journey progresses with one small step at a time. 💗
